In a rapid response to changing conditions in Ocean County, the United Way of Ocean County has announced that it will fund programs that address residents’ needs in three critical areas: Education, Income and Health. “Every Spring we hold a meeting of our 46 Certified Agencies to discuss the county’s needs and how United Way intends to apply the resources raised in order to achieve the most impact with our donors’ dollars. Our agencies then apply for funding for programs that address those needs,” said Interim Executive Director Lisa Giannascoli, “ we haven’t had a situation like the one we are currently experiencing, when the needs of the community have changed so dramatically from one year to the next, in a very long time.” As a result, over the next year, the Board of Directors will dedicate 40% of all allocable funds raised to programs that increase earning potential, increase long term financial stability, and address emergency needs like food and housing. An additional 35% of all allocable funds raised will be awarded to programs that increase access to healthcare, and 25% will support education programs and programs that help residents of all ages achieve their potential. A Request for Proposals has also been distributed for an extra $10,000 that has been earmarked for the United Way’s own economic stimulus grant. United Way of Ocean County Certified Agencies were challenged recently by Chair of the Board level Fund Distribution Committee, Ed Liguori, to present an innovative proposal to increase earning potential in Ocean County. Ocean County Hunger Relief Executive Director Carol Latif believes that United Way of Ocean County is on the right track. She said “when you give to United Way of Ocean County you know your money is going to be used the right way.” |
